Timber Gates
Oak, iroko and hardwood gates for strength and style
A good gate has a simple job: look right, swing properly and stand up to weather and use. A bad gate sags, drags, twists and eventually gets propped open with a brick.
At JM Joinery we manufacture bespoke timber gates from our workshop in Callow, Herefordshire. Everything is made to order – sized to your opening, matched to your property and built with proper section sizes and hardware.
We offer supply only or supply & fit within our installation area.
Why choose a JM Joinery gate?
Made to measure – sized for your opening, not cut down from a standard panel.
Proper joinery construction – not thin softwood panels stapled together.
Hardwood options – oak, iroko and other durable timbers.
Built for real use – weight, hinges and posts all designed to work together.
Manual or automation-ready – gates built to suit your gate motor installer.
Gate styles & designs
We can work from your sketch, a photo you like, or design something from scratch. Typical types include:
Driveway gates – pairs or single-leaf, solid or part-open.
Garden gates – pedestrian gates for side access, gardens and courtyards.
Field-style and country gates – traditional rail designs for rural properties.
Contemporary gates – clean lines, slatted designs, minimal detailing.
Top details can be flat, arched, swept or shaped to suit the property. We can also match existing gates or other joinery on the house.
Timber options
We’ll recommend the right timber based on exposure, look and budget:
Oak – classic, heavy and long-lasting when detailed and finished properly.
Iroko and other durable hardwoods – very stable, ideal for exposed sites.
Quality softwood – for lighter-use gates or where the budget is tighter.
All supplied from sources that promote sustainable forest management.
Construction, posts & hardware
Gates only work as well as what they hang on. We design the whole setup:
Chunky sections sized to cope with width and height.
Mortice and tenon joints where appropriate, properly glued and pegged.
Matching posts in suitable section sizes, with advice on concrete/footings.
Heavy-duty hinges and latches chosen for the gate size and weight.
Drop bolts, shoot bolts and stops to control movement and wind loading.
If you’re planning electric automation, tell us up front so we can:
Design gate leaves, frames and bracing to suit motors and hardware.
Discuss with your gate automation installer what they need from us.
Finishes
We can supply gates:
Pre-treated and ready for site finishing, or
Factory finished with oil or paint systems suitable for external use.
For hardwoods like oak and iroko, we’ll give clear advice on realistic colour expectations and maintenance – no false promises about “no upkeep”.
Supply Only or Supply & Fit
Supply Only
Ideal if you have a trusted groundworks / fencing / gate installer.
Gates, posts and ironmongery supplied as a complete package.
Collection from our workshop in Callow, HR2 8BP (delivery can be discussed depending on the order).
Supply & Fit
Available within roughly an hour’s drive of our workshop.
We install posts, hang gates, set hardware and adjust everything to work properly.
Automation units are normally fitted by your gate motor specialist – we coordinate on dimensions and fixings.
What we need to quote
To price your gates sensibly, it helps if you can send:
Opening size (width between posts/walls and desired height).
Photos of the driveway, garden or area where the gate will go.
Any style examples – sketches or images of what you like.
Whether you want manual only or plan to add automation.
Whether you need supply only or supply & fit.
Your postcode.
We’ll then send a clear, itemised quote and a realistic lead time.
